XEROSTOM® includes Saliactive® composition

Saliactive®, with its patented formula rich in prebiotics and natural antioxidants, protects the oral microbiome and mucosal barrier.

Saliva is the natural fluid that hydrates and lubricates, cleans and protects the mouth. The defect or absence of saliva automatically reduces the quality of life.

Oncological treatments, medication use, menopause, and some systemic diseases are the most common causes of changes in salivary function.

Frequent questions

The causes of xerostomia are diverse, the most common are the following:

  • More than 400 medications: antidepressants, anti-inflammatories, diuretics, anxiolytics, etc.
  • Oncological treatments: Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy.
  • Menopause and breast cancer treatment
  • Pelvic floor syndrome and medication for urinary incontinence
  • Alterations of the immune system: Sjögren’s syndrome, HIV infection, Hepatitis, Multiple sclerosis, Lupus erythematosus, etc.
  • Systemic diseases: Diabetes, Cancer, Alzheimer’s, rheumatic diseases, etc.
  • Renal and/or liver failure: Dialysis, Liver diseases…
  • Maxillofacial and oral pathology.
  • Other situations: Stress, alcohol, tobacco, sleep apnea, hormonal alterations, aging, weight loss regimens, etc.
  • Combination of the above.

The main signs and symptoms of xerostomia are:

  • Feeling of dry and irritated mouth.
  • Halitosis and bad taste in the mouth/strange flavors.
  • Burning sensation in the mouth and tongue.
  • Difficulty swallowing, chewing, swallowing and speaking.
  • Thick saliva (pasty mouthfeel). Thread of saliva between the teeth or tongue and the roof of the mouth.
  • Pain in soft tissues and/or tongue.
  • Need to moisten the mouth in short intervals of time.

The presence of these symptoms significantly affects the quality of life of patients. In addition, decreased salivary flow increases the risk of numerous oral pathologies and problems, such as:

  • Rapid progression of dental caries and increase in dental plaque accumulation
  • Periodontal disease
  • Tooth wear
  • Mucositis
  • Cracks in the lips
  • Denture intolerance and lack of retention
  • Infections by opportunistic pathogens; for example, Candida spp.
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Insomnia, irritability and depression
  • Increased risk of respiratory infections

First of all, measures should be taken aimed at better hydration of the oral cavity. Therefore, it is advisable to drink water frequently to keep the mucous membranes hydrated and replace your oral hygiene products with moisturizing oral products such as XEROSTOM.

It is advisable to avoid irritating factors and foods, such as coffee, tobacco and alcohol, and spicy, acidic and/or salty foods, and encourage the consumption of fruits and vegetables.

It is also essential to take extreme measures to maintain good oral health with two objectives: hydrate the oral cavity and prevent the appearance of diseases:

  • Brush your teeth three times a day for at least two minutes with soft brushes.
  • Use of pastes and mouthwashes with fluoride, with moisturizing ingredients (such as xylitol, which in addition to moisturizing helps prevent cavities in certain concentrations, or
  • Betaine) and without irritating ingredients (such as sodium lauryl sulfate or alcohol), since which can increase xerostomia.
  • Daily interproximal hygiene, either with dental floss/tape or interproximal brushes.
  • Periodic check-up with the dentist.

Likewise, the factor causing xerostomia must be identified and whether it can be modified.

The XEROSTOM line is designed to be used as long as required.

No, no product in the XEROSTOM line contains gluten or lactose in its formulation.

Cancer treatment can have many side effects in the oral cavity. Among them xerostomia, difficulty eating, alteration of taste, risk of rapidly progressive cavities and involvement of the oral mucosa among others.

XEROSTOM takes care of the oral cavity of the cancer patient throughout the treatment and once it is finished.
